County Level Advocacy: Connect With the School Board & the FCPS Superintendent

Speak at or Attend a School Board Meeting
Speak at or Attend a School Board Meeting
Fairfax County and City residents, OR non-Fairfax County residents who are FCPS students, staff members, guardians, or business partners, are able to speak at School Board meetings or submit a video testimony.
Interested speakers must register and are then chosen through a lottery system.
Register online using the link above, beginning at 8:00 am starting on the fourth business day before the next regular business meeting, or
Register by phone by calling the School Board office at 571.423.1075 between 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.
Both live speakers and video testimony's are limited to two (2) minutes in length.

Fairfax County Public Schools has twelve (12) School Board members, with nine (9) members representing each of the county's districts and three (3) members-at-large. A student representative, elected to serve a one-year term, sits with the School Board but does not vote.
The FCPS School Board makes important decisions that determine the quality and type of education our student's receive and so it is important that they hear from their constituents.
We encourage you to connect with your district's school board member via email, as well as the other school board members and FCPS Senior Leadership to ensure your voice is heard.

We are writing to express our urgent concern regarding the premature and unrestricted use of generative artificial intelligence tools in our children's education, particularly through the county’s participation in the first cohort of the new ChatGPT for Teachers initiative. With this hasty embrace of ChatGPT for Teachers, FCPS is taking on exceptionally high and unnecessary risk to our teachers’ professional skill development and expertise with resulting harms that fall disproportionately on our children, without their awareness or consent.

The landscape of AI is evolving quickly, far too quickly to understand its effects on children's developing minds, or its impact on their cognitive health and mental health. We do NOT want our children using Generative AI tools in the classroom.
We ask for a two-year moratorium that no Generative AI be allowed for use by students in grades K-8.
We ask for a one-year moratorium that no Generative AI be used in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade for the 2026-27 school year.
We ask that if Generative AI is used in 12th grade during the 2026-27 school year, that parents be given the option to fully opt-out their children from using it.

FCPS: Return to Front-Facing Camera View for Adult Speakers during Community Engagement
During the Community Engagement portion of Fairfax County School Board meetings, the video feed for in-person speakers does not show the speaker’s face. Only participants who send in pre-recorded videos or are speaking online are able to present a front-facing video testimony. A front-facing camera view of all community speakers during public comment period would allow every speaker - whether they are in-person, virtual participants, and those live-streaming or recording - equal opportunity for more meaningful and personal engagement.
